Chennai: On a day city police booked Tamil film actor Jai for drunken driving, the city police managed to get a conviction for an auto driver for a similar offence. Auto driver Somu (54) of New Washermanpet was caught during vehicle checks exactly a week ago and was convicted by a court on Thursday, according to the police. On September 15, around 6 pm, sub inspector Sakkarai of Tondiarpet traffic enforcement wing flagged the auto on the Tondiarpet-Tiruvottiyur road and found the auto driver to be driving the vehicle under the influence of alcohol. “He was booked under section 185 of the motor vehicle Act and produced before a judge in the metropolitan magistrate courts, Egmore. The court sentenced the auto driver for a week’s time in prison and a fine of Rs 1,000, according to an official release.

On the same day that auto driver Somu was sentenced to a week’s time in Jail, actor Jai who has been booked for drunk driving for the second time in three years was released on station bail.

The actor, driving his Audi under the influence of alcohol rammed onto the parapet wall of the Adyar flyover around 3 am on Thursday. The Adyar traffic investigation wing had booked the actor under various sections including drunk driving.

It is to be noted that the actor had similar flashback incidents- twice in 2014.  “We have recommended to the regional transport office for his driving license to be cancelled,” said a senior police officer. But, whether the actor will meet the same fate as an auto driver who did a similar offence has to be seen.
