At a time when farmers are committing suicides due to lack of irrigation water and unability to repay their debts, here is a film titled Vayakaattu Maappilai directed by Vimal Murugan, which insists the need to implement ‘The Athikadavu-Avinashi Scheme’. While Vetrivelan and Yogendhra play the lead roles, few films old Jothisha has been roped in as the lead girl.
T.S Diwakar pens the story, screenplay and dialogues. Talking about the significance of the movie, Vimal says, “I know that I am touching a controversial subject — ‘The Athikadavu-Avinashi Scheme’, an ambitious project, which envisages providing irrigation facilities to the drought prone areas and ground water depleted areas of Kongunad and the western parts of Tamil Nadu.
All said and done, the promises made by every government and politician are still in paper and nothing has been executed. The film brings to fore the
predicaments of Kaaramadai, Annur, Paerundhurai, and Puliampatti farmers and people who have to walk miles to get potable water. We have also brought some of the real farmers on board.”
