Sanal Kumar Sasidharan is having a late lunch, he has only just got off the phone when it starts ringing again. But he doesn’t give a clichéd response to everyone even when the questions are the same — how does he react to the state award for the best film for Ozhivudivasathe Kali? “I want this film to reach out to a lot of people because it has politics in it, it is contemporary and it is socially relevant. This award will help people know about the film and I am very happy about that.” He had always maintained that awards are meant for the growth of good cinema.

There’s been a tendency in the past couple of years to give away a few major awards to art films and distribute the rest among commercial films. “It is not exactly a good trend but that doesn't mean commercial ones can't be good films."
