New found Princehood: Amith Chakalakkal
Honey Bee-fame Amith Chakalakkal, whose portrayal of the drunkard Prince in C/o Saira Banu has been praised, is euphoric.
Among the many fresh faces that stepped into the world of cinema and fame through the hit Honey Bee, Amith Chakalakkal was one who found feet in the industry. His drunkard character Prince Chakkalakkal in C/o Saira Banu has been appreciated by audience. And for Amith, it was not easy to pull off Prince. “Prince is an arrogant guy, a law student with all the ‘attitude’ of a senior in the college. He belongs to an extremely well-off family and has all the bad habits.”
“The reason it became a challenge for me is because I don't drink or smoke in reality and had to pull off a character that was at the extreme end of all those.” Actor Jayasurya, through a Facebook post, had appreciated Amith for his performance as a drunkard. An elated Amith says, “Out of all the Malayalam movies we have grown up watching, very few actors could pull off a drunkard’s character without overdoing it. It was highly risky and I was quite scared too.” On how he landed the role despite being a teetotaller, Amith says, “Before casting me in the role, I had met director Sony chettan and he started telling me about the character. After the whole meeting, I told him that I don’t drink. I still remember the startled look on his face,” laughs Amith.
“He thought I might not take the role, but then I was up for the game and I’m grateful to him for making me pull this off perfectly. The first scene was with Amala madam and Shane and their co-operation also helped me a lot.” Amith is also part of Honey Bee 2, which is all set for release. He plays an extremely different role in this movie compared to C/o Saira Banu. “I play the same character Martin Punnyalan. Martin, unlike Prince, is a very responsible big brother. Both these characters are my favourites,” says Amith, who will also be seen in the lead role in the upcoming Melle.
