The happy, go-lucky person: Rajini Chandy

Some on-screen portrayals are so convincing that it is difficult to separate the personas of the character and the artiste who breathed life into the role. Rajini Chandy, who played the acerbic and feisty Muthassi in Oru Muthassi Gadha, finds herself in this peculiar situation.   She says, “Recently I met a production guy and after I started talking with him in a friendly way, he confided that he was too scared to approach and talk to me initially and thought I might hit him! I am this happy go lucky and fun-loving person but I am perceived as being a shrew.”

Rajini punctuates this with her trademark loud, boisterous laughter. For all those wondering about her future cinema plans, here is news. The very jovial, humorous and cool Rajini has acted in a short film Vaalnakshatram written and directed by a software professional Neelesh E.K. This film has the festival of Christmas as the backdrop. Rajini will again be acting as a Muthassi in this short film that will be screened today in Kochi. Talking about the reasons for acting in this film, she says, “I thought this character suited my role and it is the story of a grandmother. I feel we should promote new talent and I also trusted the director and thought he had it in him to deliver. It was also easy to deal with him.”

Vaalnakshatram is about a sixty-plus woman who is living alone with her son settled abroad. She is an independent woman who looks after everything herself and does not depend on anybody but yearns for her children to be near, especially at Christmas. Director Neelesh says, “There are many such elderly people in real life who live alone. You can say the recent technology advancements help in closing distances but having your children around you physically is a very different feeling. I hope this film will send out a message to children all over.” Bivin, also working in a software company in Infopark, plays Rajini’s son and Megha the daughter-in-law.
