Sharu Varghese gets her promised role
The VJ turned actor waited two years to star in Orayiram Kinakkalal.
First question — we make commitments to others and to ourselves all the time but how many times do we honour those promises? Second question — how many people do we know who make a promise and then stand by it come hell or high water? One person fits the bill —- Sharu Varghese. The Dubai-based VJ and model made a commitment and stuck to that for two years, making huge sacrifices on the way. Unusual in tinsel town, where promises are often like drawing a line in water, but full credit to Sharu for keeping her word.
So what is the commitment being talked about? She explains, “Two years ago, I was offered a role by debutant director Pramod Mohan, who asked me not to sign any other project till I finished his film. Even though I got offers for other films, I did not take them up because I believe in keeping my word. I was also asked to stop my VJing for some time so that the freshness of my look would be there.” Sharu did both without any qualms and in fact, she has remained the constant of the cast though the others have changed in the two years.
“Pramod may have retained me because I stuck to my promise,” she jokes. The film being discussed is Orayiram Kinakkalal, with Biju Menon in the lead. The film, like the name hints, is about a thousand dreams of a set of five people, with Sharu playing Sherin —a café manager. She will be paired opposite Roshan in the film. It will also have a lot of situational comedy. The role, Sharu says, was what pulled her in since it would give her a lot of scope for acting. Sharu was also seen in a small role in the film Mudhugauv.
Sharu is not only a VJ, but also a model, who has made ramp appearances in Dubai and Bengaluru. So that is a VJ, a model and an actor ticked off the list. But wait — she springs another surprise - Sharu is also an architect. With a tinkling laugh she says, “Now I do everything except what I studied.” She has to her credit a project she has completed in Kerala— a church in Alappuzha but that's the only one — she grins and says, before she got bitten by the VJing bug. It was her VJing stint in Dubai that had her interacting and interviewing the stars and directors of Mollywood and igniting in her a desire to act herself.
