I have been learning classical music from a very young age. I am basically a drummer and also play the guitar. It was also my biggest dream to become a music composer. The song (Poomaram) reached Maharaja’s College in 2008. When I joined the college, I heard my seniors singing it. I am very happy with the response the Poomaram song has received. I used to like the song and its lyrics. So I learnt it, composed it and was planning to release it as an album. That is when I met Shine sir (Abrid Shine) who asked me to sing a song. When I sang this one and told him about my plan, he asked me if I could give it to his movie. The tune we used to sing in college was quite different; this is my version. Nothing else has been changed. I feel very elated when people call me up to tell me how good the song is. I have been getting offers, but, I will take them up only after finishing my work for Poomaram, for which my other song is a melody.

What they have shown in the video, they have almost got it right. At least 50 students used to gather around whenever a song was rendered. Though there might not always be a guitar, all used to clap and sing. Any time we felt happy — before going for youth festival or during Onam or Christmas — we used to sing this song.

I have been walking around with music in my mind for a very long time, all this while it was my parents have been supportive. Now they are very happy, when people say I’ve done a good job. Everyone in college is also happy.

When it comes to the negativity the song has been receiving, I am taking it positively. There are people who are painstakingly trying to degrade the work, I believe they are wasting their time. I also believe that if something is being attacked, it must be having some value. That way I feel happy about it.

Spirited song

The musician fell in love with the Poomaram song during his first year in Maharaja’s college. It was Sudheesh Sudha, a former student of the college who bought the song to the campus in 2008. The original duo who sang it first is said to have heard another version of this song in a toddy shop.
