#MeToo in Mollywood: Second case against actor Jayasurya

Malayalam actor Jayasurya is again facing the wrath of actresses and has registered another FIR against him with another actress's complaint. With such recent news concerning the actress’s allegations of sexual harassment occurring within the Malayalam film industry being on the rise, there was no doubt that this complaint was only going to be one of many more. Based on what the Kerala Police have said the second FIR was filed under 354, 354 A (A 1)( I ) and 354 D of the Indian Penal Code. The case which was initially registered in Thiruvananthapuram will be moved to Thodupuzha Police Station for accountability.
These developments come after the report of the Hema Committee, after which many women from the Malayalam film industry have come out with their stories of exploitation and harassment. On Thursday, the actress Sonia Malhar narrated her history and gave disturbing accounts of abuse she encountered in her early career.
Sonia remembered a particular scene while filming in Thodupuzha where the crew turned savage. In her words, “While returning from the toilet somebody snatched me and held me, it’s scarring. I was going to pee, sorry after I did but this guy apologised.” After this incident, Sonia had to go through a chain of frustrations in her career such as receiving reimbursements long after due dates and withdrawal from projects where she received commitments.
The actress explained why she decided to share it all, she stated that the fact that the actress from another geography had been through yet another scary act made her plead for reprisal. Many have kept quiet most notably Sonia about this Hema Committee report and the oppression of women in the industry, Sonia expressed her displeasure by stating, “It is appalling that the women of the other states have so much insult that she cannot be even let into a place and respected as she should.”
On August 28, the first FIR in relation to this scandal was lodged against actor cum CPI M MLA Mukesh M on the complaint of actress Minu Muneer. The complaint to the police named Jayasurya and other leading figures from the industry such as actors Maniyanpilla Raju and Idavela Babu.
Not only did Minu Muneer accuse abuse against her but she also claimed that Jayasurya once hugged her from behind while kissing her without her consent whereas Idavela Babu begged her to sleep with him. She even recounted the uncalled-for advances of Maniyanpilla Raju who lewdly inquired about assigning her to a hotel.
