A still from the film.

Director: Anbazhagan

Cast: Samuthirakani, Thambi Ramaiah, Yuvan, Athulya

After two films Saatai and Appa, which spoke about the need to reform the education system in schools, this is the third time Samuthirakani heads a similar theme. Here in Aduttha Saatai, he is once again Dayalan, but is a college professor this time around.

Dayalan (Samuthirakani), a role model professor in Appa Arts and Science College wants to bring about a change among the students who are divided by caste and also among irresponsible professors. Then there’s a self-centered caste obsessed principal Singam Perumal (Thambi Ramaiah). With this premise, how Dayalan achieves his task forms the rest.

There’s hardly anything by way of story and the director has compiled few random incidents to make it a film. From the word go, the film is in a preachy tone and scenes don’t develop organically. There are plenty of lengthy moral lectures from Samuthirakani. All right, I agree he is a natural performer, but after a point he becomes repetitive, though it’s not his fault. Thambi Ramaih in a role with grey shades is loud.  Yuvan, Athulya and Sriram as students are adequate.  Though contemporary issues of students are addressed, the narrative is uninspiring. The student parliament idea and the campus interviews for arts and science colleges are interesting bits. Clocking at more than 125 minutes, the length could have used a bit of trimming.
