Crooning in SINC
A versatile playback singer, Bengaluru-based Sinchan Dixit recounts her journey to the top.
Remember that ever soothing number Indu Ninna Edurali you can’t seem to get out of your head? Yeah, shocker alert but the female playback from the track, Sinchan Dixit actually hails from the city! And if that doesn’t surprise you enough, the young singer would have been a chef, alternatively.
An ardent follower of Asha Bhonsle and S Janaki, music has always been a part of Sinchan’s life, ever since she was a child. “My first guru was my own aunt, Nirmala Kulkarni and my first performance was at the age of five, at the foundation ceremony of an Iskcon Temple on Janmashthami. As I have seen the temple grow, it has always symbolised to me the evolution of my own journey,” enthuses the artiste.
More than 500 stage shows across India and the world including UK, USA, Canada, and the Middle East and multiple playbacks later, Sinchan still talks about her love for cooking and how “khaana and gaana” is her life’s motto. Right from her young adolescent years, she used to save up from her pocket money to buy tape recorders and listen to music. At the age of 12 she indulged in professional Hindustani Classical music training from her guru, Pandit Geetha Hegde and is still indebted to her.
However, she believes her family’s role has been indispensable too in helping her achieve this position. She credits their faith and trust in her potential and reminisces how every time some feat didn’t come easily to her, they were the one who were confident about her. “I comefrom a family of literary enthusiasts who raised me very independently. One of my great grandfathers is an acclaimed writer and the other one was a freedom fighter, so if there’s one thing I’ve been hereditarily blessed with, it’s strength and morale. It is remarkable how not the highest level of success has made them get carried away in the slightest,” she says.
Currently appearing on the American channel, Desi Plaza TV’s America’s Texas Star Kalakar as a celebrity music judge alongside Meenakshi Sheshadri, this IIFA winner for her song Currentu Hoda Timealli from Love in Mandya gushes about the adrenaline rush that stage performances give her. Her journey had started with a talent show called Yede Tumbi Haaduvenu, her shot to recognition was the Hindi Sa Re Ga Ma Pa in 2006.
When asked about her future prospects, she mentions a web series revolving around her own personal culinary experiments and skills, along with her recent playback debut in Telugu for Rajahamsa. From hosting TV shows related to cooking, to releasing a video single called Chaandan, Sinchan is all packed with ideas, passion and the due recognition her perseverance has always deserved. She signs off, saying, “The transition from being an amateur to stardom is very vapid these days. Attending concerts, trying to recognise good music and dedication are the only firm pillars to success.”
