The singer story teller
Singer Vernon Noronha's Come Back Jack, through its lyrics, offers a slice of his own life.
Every song has a story to tell, Vernon Noronha’s songs are no different. But then one cannot simply sit and listen to his songs without experiencing a roller coaster of emotions. Loss, love, joy and that tingling sensation in the pit of your heart gushing out as tears and smiles. His songs are more than just stories.
He is best known in the independent music scene for his rendition that comes under the genre ‘Surf and Easy Listening’.
His latest single, Come Back Jack from the EP Closer to Home had music lovers up and listening. Music lovers in Kochi will get a chance to listen to him on November 18.
Come Back Jack, through its lyrics, offers a slice of Vernon’s life. The video shows the life of a man dealing with alcohol addiction and by the end of the video, we see that it was written by Vernon as a tribute to his father who has been missing since 2013.
When asked more about his album, this Mumbai based singer-song writer says, “Like the name, all the five songs are connected to ‘home’. For example, the first song is about my dad and there is another song Lunch box which is about how I don’t get lunch from home anymore. I eat out mostly.”
He adds: “I always used to sing right from school days and participate in competitions. That is what got me into music and started song writing in college. He also adds,
“I am a self-taught musician, I’ve never taken professional classes. Performances started when I was in college and I used to perform at pubs and hotels. Around 2010, I took on the role of a singer-songwriter and has been performing full time ever since.”
When asked about his expectations from the Kochi crowd, he says, “I’ve heard there is a lot of independent music support down south, it is not distracted like it is in Mumbai. There is good support for independent music here but people are distracted by cover and Bollywood music.”
About the response he gets for his music, he says: “It is good, it’s mixed. There are a lot of choices here. As a singer-songwriter, I have to really push from my side, I just cannot sit around and ask people to come and listen to my music. People here are just getting into the fact that there is something apart from Bollywood music.” Vernon, who is currently performing in Bangalore, will come live at the Muse Room on November 18.
