It was a night like no other. “I love you, I love you, I love you,” said Asha Bhosle, towards the end of her first-ever live concert, The Sound of Silence, in the city on Saturday. People were taken on a trip down memory lane and Asha engaged them not just with her songs but also her wit and charisma. She began the show by welcoming the audience with the song Aaiye Meharbaan. In fact, she joked about how she wasn’t sure if the song Chura Liya Hai Tumne was hers or not, considering the number of times it has been remixed.
Interestingly, the crowd mostly comprised of middle-aged audience, who seemed to have grown up on a dose of Asha. While she took the audience on a spectacular music journey singing several of her hits such as Do Lafzon Ki, Yeh Mera Dil, Tum Jo Mil Gaye Ho, Dard-e-dil and many more, she kept the best for the last and ended the evening with Dum Maaro Dum and Piya Tu.
While Asha did joke about how she’s aged — she’s 84 — and how this could be her last performance in the city, one couldn’t help notice how she was super energetic for someone her age, although she occasionally did need support to stand, and took breaks. Singer Javed Ali, who kick-started the show and filled in for her during the brief intervals.
