Meet Oppam's 4 Musics
4 Musics, the team behind the music of Oppam, consists of four young friends bonded by a common passion.
Malayalam film industry has witnessed quite a few hit songs composed by musical duos and bands. However, movie buffs were in for a surprise when they noticed four names under the credit of music director when Priyadarshan’s Oppam released. This is the second film from the team ‘4 Musics’.
‘4 Musics’ stepped into the industry by composing sound track for Just Married released last year. Jim Jacob, Biby Mathew, Eldhose Alias and Justin James together make up
4 Musics. “We have been friends since childhood and hail from the same locality. In fact, it was that bond which prompted us to chase our music dreams. Our first musical assignment was released in the form of an album Mazhathulli in 2007,” says Jim, who runs a recording studio in Kochi. Jim and Biby, a singer by profession, are the only members staying in Kerala. Eldhose is currently in Saudi Arabia and Justin stays in New Zealand in connection with their jobs.
It was through producer Antony Perumbavoor that 4 Musics landed Oppam. “After Mazhathulli, it was for Just Married that we teamed up after a long gap. Before that, we were very active through our band ‘91BC’, which has a total of 10 members. But after Mazhathulli, we moved to different locations for educations and jobs. However, the same album opened a platform for four of us to join hands.
Those tracks from the album gave us the opportunity to work for a TV programme and later, for Just Married. Though our tracks got noticed, we did not get more offers. It was then that we approached Antony chettan, he told us that he will introduce us to Priyadarshan sir, but won’t recommend us. That was how we met Priyan sir,” he says.
When 4 Musics approached Priyadarshan, he was in the pre-production of Oppam. “We thought that he would say, ‘I will call you in a few days’. But what happened was that he gave us the situation for the songs and instructed us to come up with compositions,” says Jim, adding, “Within a few days, we went back to his office in Chennai and made him listen to our tracks.”
Jim points out that all tracks have contributions from the four musicians. “When one of us concentrates on Pallavi, the second one sets the Anu Pallavi. We all sit together and discuss each note. No tracks will come out under our banner until all of us are satisfied with the output,” says Jim. “Another happy factor is that we could work with our favourite singer M.G Sreekumar. When we were asked to find a voice for Lalettan, we had no second choice other than him,” he says.
4 Musics is in the process of finalising their next project.
