An adventitious state of mind
A city-based musician shares how the trend of unconventional albums reigns supreme.
Music and artistes are ever-changing. The world was unaware of the soulful strums from Paul McCartney’s guitar carrying forth a blistering melody when the Beatles took the world by storm in 1960. In the years to come, bands like Pink Floyd, Steely Dan, Metallica, Karnivool each became forerunners in their own ways, paving the way for a music scene simply brimming with the unknown. And that is the very premise of this article. The unknown. The unpredictable.
Fast-forward to 2017, today, as we wait for the eccentric, heady, weird progressive pioneers,Tool to release their ever elusive new album. We hang onto every scrap of information we find on all parts of the internet. We discuss among our friends, and rumors spread like wildfire in the scene. Will it even release? Won’t it? Will we ever know?
And this suspense is exactly what’s so delicious, both from the audience’s point of view and the artiste’s alike. As a musician putting content out to the audience, a pivotal part of what makes an upcoming single so great is the surprise element. It goes without saying that an anticipated release will also be highly speculated upon. So when the content finally drops into the hands of the listener, he or she is not just listening to the musical intent of creator, but also to the artistic direction, the intention to surprise, to thrill, and this is especially true with respect to unconventional releases.
The music scene in Bengaluru is seeing some very unconventional and eclectic music take center-stage. Bengaluru-based bands like Rainburn and Pineapple Express India keep us guessing, what with an absolute smorgasbord of influences, styles and creativity up their sleeves.’Up their sleeves’ being the keyword here, because details about any upcoming tracks are deliciously held back to just the right extent!
Venues are seeing more and more appreciation for the originality that is entailed by an unconventional take on music. This reception is being bolstered by the excitement, and that is a direct result of this exact regulation when it comes to information on new a new single, EP or album. I can’t help but be excited from both perspectives, as some of my own content as part of my band Project MishraM is going to be hitting the web soon. The music scene has given us lots. At least, as a Bengaluru kid I’ve been spoilt with excellent variety in music, and the best part? There’s so much more to come.…Or is there? Ah, if only I knew the details!
