Ever since Showkali from Accham Enbadhu Madamaiyada released, the popularity and demand for this Tamil rapper duo seems to be only increasing every day. The latest hit for ADK and Sri Rascol is the background song, Maayon, from Vijay’s blockbuster film Mersal. In a casual chat with us, the rappers share about their constant collaboration with A.R. Rahman and about their upcoming projects.

“Getting an opportunity to work with ARR sir is very rare. But when he gives us something, he makes sure it is really good. When it comes to Maayon, Suresh Perumal, Rahman sir’s sound engineer, told us that he wanted us to do a song for the film Mersal. Sir also said he wanted us as a duo and we were ecstatic.

The very next day, we went to the studio and recorded it,” ADK starts the conversation.

Speaking about the response for the song, an excited Sri says, “Even before the movie released, there were rumours running around that we were doing a song in Mersal. And after the song got featured in the movie, the feedback was phenomenal. Though it was only a very small portion, fans loved it a lot and we didn’t expect such a crazy response!”

So what makes this duo a favourite for ARR? They respond, “Getting a chance to sing for him back to back is not our decision — it’s his. We think he likes us because we’re committed to what we do. And we guess he also likes the fact that we respond and collaborate so easily, in spite of us not being in Chennai. Other two important factors are that we give importance to Tamil and we are unique.”
Sharing with us about their future projects, ADK says, “Both of us have again sung for A.R. Rahman for the film Cinema Veeran, which has been directed by Aishwaryaa R. Dhanush. Apart from that, I have sung a song for the film Sakka Podu Podu Raja, for which STR has composed the music.”

On the other hand, Sri says, “I’ve sung a song for the film Kee, which has been composed by my close friend Vishal Chandrasekhar. Apart from that, our (ADK and Sri Rascol) independent music album Rapacharam will have two of its songs released very soon.”

Sri is also pumped up with the fact that the scenario for Tamil rappers is very good now —“It’s a positive scene for all of us out here. Unlike the past, Tamil rappers are now able to earn a lot of money through various avenues — like social media, independent songs and more.”

On a concluding note, ADK reveals the duo’s ambitious plans for the future.
“We want to get into merchandising — through our record label. Through that, we want to sign new artistes and give them some sort of exposure. Besides that, we also wish to sing for other big music composers in the future,” he says as both sign off.
