Soundcake is an acoustic act from the members of the band Inthenow — Aditya Ashwath and Anirudh Ravi are two singer-songwriters based out of Bengaluru.

They describe their songs as “reminiscent of sipping chai on a rainy Sunday afternoon.” Drawing influences from artists such as Dave Matthews band, Foo fighters, Sting and John Mayer, they are known to try to express the inner world through songs that talk about everyday life, from the magic to the mundane. We talk to the musical duo who have performed at a number of venues in the city about why they planned on starting something sans the rest of their members, opening for noted bands like Peepal Tree and more...

Soundcake was nothing but an experiment when it began, according to Anirudh. “As a musician, I have always been a ‘band guy’ but started falling in love with acoustics after a couple of gigs. And acoustic performances seem to be the trend now. Singer – songwriter duos are doing much better than bands, so we are just going with the flow,” he says. But what is the story behind their unique name, we are curious.

“It’s along the lines of being a flavour you get when you listen to much – a mix of sweet and bitterness, like coffee cake,” Aditya says trying his best to put it into words. “Adi has a lot of deep thoughts, that’s how we get our name, compositions and everything else,” laughs Anirudh, who also doubles as a guitar teacher.

While their band has been around for over a year and a half, for Soundcake, the journey has just begun. With over fifteen original compositions under their wing and 30, just between Anirudh and Aditya, they certainly seem set to rule. “Why play somebody else’s songs when you can play your own, man!” says Anirudh almost sounding exasperated!

“Our music mostly revolves around growing up, heartbreak and travel. I mostly write about heartbreaks – I seem to be good at writing about it,” smirks the guitarist-cum-vocalist who credits who musical career to Led Zepplin. And while Anirudh teaches, Aditya is pursuing his higher studies.

“But we manage to make time, jam together and create new tunes. There have been times when we have had enough of each other considering the time we spend together, but that’s normal I think,”says Aditya in conclusion.
