Sikandar’s poor performance all around has shown that even a superstar like Salman Khan cannot salvage a movie that has a weak plotline. Another person who stands to lose from the movie’s performance is the female lead, Rashmika Mandanna.

Rashmika was having a golden run at the box office until she met the Sikandar bump. Her last three movies — Chhaava, Pushpa 2 and Animal — defied all trends to become superhits, so much so that she came to be known as the “girl with the Midas touch”. This epithet does not come without reason too.

Her radiant screen presence, her dancing skills and her acting chops made her the perfect foil for the generally aggressive protagonists. Her Indian looks and her openness to experiment were rewarded with films across Bollywood and Tollywood. When she was cast as a Marathi queen in Chhaava, many were of the opinion that a Marathi actress would have done more justice to the role. But that could not stop the Chhaava juggernaut.

But, with Sikandar, she too was defeated by the factors that ail Bollywood now — stale plots, outdated direction and inability to evolve with the audiences’ tastes.

However, Rashmika may take this in her stride. In an earlier interview, she had said: “I know all of this can go anytime. All of this can come to you at any time. It’s not a permanent thing, and I can’t get obsessed with it. I don’t relate to fame. I just feel like it’s come to me because of the love from the audience, and I’m very grateful for it.”

Her level-headedness shows that she knows about the ephemeral nature of fame. Critics have pointed out earlier that Rashmika has to choose performance-based movies instead of sticking to movies that run on the prowess of the male lead. Her future choices reflect that.

In her upcoming Telugu movie, The Girlfriend, she plays the title role and stars opposite Dheekshith Shetty. Directed by Rahul Ravindran, the movie reportedly revolves around the titular character.

Her another future release is Kubera, which has already generated a lot of buzz. Rashmika stars alongside giants like Dhanush and Nagarjuna in the movie. From the posters released so far, the movie seems to offer something off-beat, and does not look like a run-of-the-mill potboiler.

Will Rashmika regain her winning streak with these releases? That remains to be seen.
