Veteran Hindi film actor Manoj Kumar passed away at the age of 87 in Mumbai's Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. He died at 3:30 AM on Friday due to complications arising from heart issues and decompensated liver cirrhosis.
Fondly known as Bharat Kumar for acting in and making patriotic movies, he was also an acclaimed director and a National Film Award recipient. The cremation will take place on Saturday (April 5th).
He also received the Padma Shri in 1992 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 2015, the latter being the highest award in Indian cinema. His 1967 directorial, Upkar, won a National Award.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi reacted to the veteran's death, writing, "Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji. He was an icon of Indian cinema, who was particularly remembered for his patriotic zeal, which was also reflected in his films. Manoj Ji's works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this hour of grief. Om Shanti."
