Comedian Rehman Khan arrested on rape charges
Rehman called her on pretext of returning the money he owed her and raped her at a hotel.
Mumbai: The Waliv police on late Tuesday arrested stand up comedian Rehman Khan after a woman filed a complaint of rape against him. He has been a part of TV shows like 'Comedy Circus', 'Mad In India', 'The Great Indian Laughter Challenge Season 3', 'Nautanki - The Comedy Theatre' to name a few.
The complainant, a 30-year-old woman, claimed that Khan had raped her at a two-star hotel in Vasai. The FIR was first lodged at Santa Cruz police station on February 29, where the complainant stays and was later transferred to Waliv police station as the crime had allegedly taken place in their jurisdiction.
Confirming the arrest, senior police officer Narayana Patil of Waliv police station said, “We arrested Khan from Kurla on Tuesday and he was produced in court on Wednesday. He has been remanded to police custody till March 14.”
According to police sources, complainant is a resident of Santa Cruz and a mother of two, while her husband works in Saudi Arabia.
She was a fan of Khan’s stand up comedy so she sent him a friend request on Facebook about a week ago and eventually they became friends and started talking on WhatsApp and Wechat.
After being friends for a while, Rehman allegedly took Rs 2 lakh as loan from her. He promised to return it soon but every time the complainant brought it up, Khan would avoid the conversation. However, Khan called her up a few months ago on the pretext of returning the money and asked her to meet him at a hotel in Vasai, where he allegedly raped her, claimed police sources. Following the incident, she approached the police. Khan has been booked under Section 375 and 376 of IPC for rape.
