Looking at the stupendous popularity of the first season of 24, it is not surprising to see the kind of curiosity the second season of the show has generated. We caught up with Anil Kapoor, the protagonist and producer of the thriller. Excerpts:

The characters you play are so etched in audience’s mind, be it Jai Singh Rathod from 24 or Kamal Mehra from Dil Dhadakne Do. How do you seamlessly fit in all these roles?
The seamlessness is because I love my work. I am very fortunate that these roles are written well. The content has to be strong. Ultimately it’s the writer, whether it’s Dil Dhadhakne Do or 24. I can’t do anything alone. I can only work hard.

Audience’s expectations are high this season. What are you bringing to the table this time?
Physically and emotionally, it is a challenging role. I have pushed the envelope this time. The story is gripping and the action will keep you at the edge of the seat. I enjoyed making the show. I am sure the audience will love it too.

At times, sequels can be risky since there is a high chance that they may or may not work. What’s your take?
Sequels come with their share of advantages — I honestly don’t think there are uncertainties or risks. It’s been two long years since the last season went off air but people still remember Jai Singh Rathod. The biggest advantage is that the show already has an established previous audience. Then there are people who watched it on YouTube or DVDs. I’m sure this has helped us gain more viewers.

You were very keen on casting Tabu but the role eventually went to Sakshi Tanwar. Why did the deal with Tabu not materialise?
The issue was the availability. She was not in a position to give the time I needed due to her commitments. But she has promised me that she will be there in the future seasons of 24. I will happily pay her ten times more.

We saw you share a passionate kiss with Surveen in the trailer. You obviously have steamy scenes with Surveen in the show. Considering you have grown up children is there any awkwardness at home?
Kaam hai yaar. Wish I had more scenes with Surveen! (laughs). There is no awkwardness. I have been working for a long time. Everybody is sensible, intelligent and independent. They know its part of my job. Why will they have a problem? Isme kya hain.

You must be a proud father. Mirziya, (which stars Anil’s son Harshvardhan Kapoor), is generating good buzz…
Let the film, the work and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra speak. They have worked hard. I have never reacted on the film. Many people are shocked to know I have a son too. They always thought I only had two daughters. Everybody is passionate about the film.
