Chennai for westeros!
We take a look at the Game of Thrones craze in the city, which is on an all-time high, with the new season premiere right around the corner.
To say that Game of Thrones is a phenomenon, is an understatement. Whether or not you watch the series, it’s impossible to ignore its presence, as the show’s popularity only seems to go higher with every season. The seventh season is right around the corner and after waiting for more than a year, fans are finally going to get doused in the world of politics, gore and magic. From a spoofy take on the series, to cosplay parties, the world of Game Of Thrones has taken over, and for good!
We got in touch with Chennai’s popular DJ Zen, who is organising a GoT- themed cosplay party this weekend. “I have been a fan of many comics and films. I’m the kind, who likes to own collectibles, posters, action figures and other merchandise. While there have been film-based parties in Chennai in the past, it’s for the first time that we are doing one based on a TV series. Such is the popularity of GoT. At the party, apart from cosplay, we will have GoT props, sigil badges and cocktails based on the different houses and much more. The response has been amazing and I’m finding it hard to limit the crowd, in fact!”
Lakshmi D, a HR professional, who has been watching the series right from when it began, shares, “The last season ended on such a cliffhanger — so many characters have undergone a complete change last season. Tyrion, my favourite, is thankfully still alive, and it’s tough to have favourites, because ‘All men must die’!” Lakshmi will be cosplaying as Septa Unella, a tough character to like.
Explaining her unusual choice, Lakshmi says, “It will be interesting to see the look on others faces. I can’t wait to ‘Shame!’ others.” (laughs)
Ramya Subramanian, a popular television anchor, is a great fan too, who has an unusual watching habit — “I cannot stand the tension of waiting a whole week to know what will happen next. So, my friends and I take an oath to binge-watch only after the whole season ends.” We only hope she successfully manages to stay away from the spoilers!
Ramya adds how Game Of Thrones, although fictional, says a lot about women power. “Daenerys is my favourite character, and it’s fantastic to watch a woman in command — and she is my best bet to sit on the Iron Throne in the end.”
Sameena Anwar, an emcee, who has done cosplays earlier, is excited for the first GoT-themed one. “I will be dressed as Daenerys, as my favorite character is Khal Drogo and I want to be his wife! (laughs) I have actually only read the books and that is what has kept me hooked.”
