Have 3 regional films and 3 children's films lined up for 2017: Priyanka
Power actress Priyanka Chopra takes out time to dish about the latest season of Quantico, Baywatch and breaking barriers.
Priyanka Chopra, in a short span of time, has managed to achieve a lot more than several of her Bollywood contemporaries. We have now come to associate her with power, determination and great acting prowess. With the second season of her hit show Quantico about to arrive on our TVs, she talks about Hollywood, the new season, representation and more.
Tell us a little about the second season of Quantico? What can fans expect from the season and Alex?
Where do I start? There is a lot happening post the winter break. It’s leading to something very big — I can’t tell you more except that, like it is with Quantico, you will never expect it. Alex has gone through a lot in this season and is put through situations that make her question her relationships, beliefs, feelings and more. She will continue to fight and never give up.
What do you enjoy better — movies or series?
I enjoy both equally. They are very different mediums for me as an actor, each with its own set of triumphs and challenges. Films are more languid — an indulgent process of creation, while TV is hectic with harsh deadlines — just go, go, go! Each has its own process and I’ve come to love both.
You also recently collaborated with Superwoman for a youtube video. How was that experience?
It was super fun. Lily is so nice and so hilarious. We had a concept in mind but we improvised a lot and that’s what made the shoot so fun.
You are the only Indian woman to be leading a western TV series. Is it daunting?
I think of myself as an actor and I go where my work takes me. Being the first was never the intention. It was doing something that challenged me personally and this was an exciting opportunity, which I could pursue on my own terms. I’ve got miles to go before I sleep — and hopefully will be doing much more of this going forward.
While googling your name with Quantico season 2, the search throws up bikini and kissing scenes. Do you think, as a woman, people tend to look beyond your incredible performance on the show?
I think you need to take it into the context of being an actor and a public figure. And, this applies also to men. Speaking for myself, yes, it does happen but it doesn’t define me. A few more such searches with other key words will produce a different story.
Why do you think there is a lack in
representation on television and even movies? How would you like to see that change?
I think it all has to do with stereotypes. Traditionally, Indian or Indian origin actors were cast in stereotypical roles, and many turned those down, which meant you saw less of those faces on TV and in film. I think things are changing globally and both film and TV have such exciting stories to be told that everyone has an opportunity. Also, the world is changing — the girl/boy next door now could be from any part of the world, so the acceptance of ethnicity in mainstream roles is no longer shocking or strange. If we have creators who are willing to tell different stories from different perspectives and executives and studios ready to back those stories, the lines of diversity and representation will evolve and change. I can already see a visible change taking place.
How has the experience been filming Baywatch?
It’s the Rock, Zac and Baywatch — a combination that spells dynamite! I had a great time playing a baddie, which is always fun. I just let myself get into the skin of being evil, yet sexy and the smart Victoria Leeds. The entire cast was so amazing and welcoming. Our director Seth Gordon was hugely supportive and encouraging.
What are your plans for 2017? Any projects that you can talk about?
Quantico season 2 resumes after the winter break and shoot is on. Baywatch releases on May 26 and we will be promoting the film across the globe. As a producer, with my production house Purple Pebble Pictures, I have three regional films and three children’s films lined up for 2017, with more in discussion.
(Quantico Season 2 will air on Star World and Star World HD at 9 pm every Tuesday, January 24 onwards)
