Still from Moonu Pennungal.

Mahalakshmi is pressed for time. It is the pack-up day of the third schedule of her new serial Moonu Pennungal telecast on Surya TV. “The team is planning to celebrate Deepavali on the sets this evening,” she says gleefully. It is Mahalakshmi’s eighth serial in which she does a bold character.

“The serial narrates the story of three different girls who come together at one point in their life. My character’s name is Gerly. She was in jail for four years for allegedly killing her sister’s kid. But, Gerly loves children. She is a bold and a person with optimism,” says Mahalakshmi who began her mini screen journey with a serial on Amrita television.

Later she was seen in soap operas such as Kunjali Marakkar, Marthandavarma, Shivakami, and Autograph.  “In two serials, I appeared as a ghost.” Mahalakshmi feels content about the response she gets for her role in Moonu Pennugal. “Throughout the serial, the girls get calls from an anonymous person. Now, people are curious to know that person. They ask me that whenever I go out,” she smiles.

Mahalakshmi had tried her luck in tinsel town also. Her last project was Memories starring Prithviraj. She had also acted in a Tamil movie. However, Mahalakshmi is not keen about acting in movies now. She feels more comfortable working on the mini screen. “One reason is that I can stay back in my native place and go home every day. Also, my parents can accompany me to the sets if required. It is like going for a job. After all, the working atmosphere will be good. I lost interest in movies once I realised the things happening inside the industry.  But, that doesn’t mean all people are bad. My previous project was with Jeethu chettan. Everyone behaved quite well on that set,” says Mahalakshmi who is currently pursuing MA English Literature at Mar Ivanios College, Thiruvananthapuram.
