Celebration of theatre
The plays, all of which had a message to the society, brought out stunning performances from the actors.
The Nishumbita Ballet and Theatre group organised Natotsav, a theatre festival recently. On the 30th and 31st of December, bidding adieu to the year gone by, the founder of Nishumbita, Dr Rammohan Holagundi payed tribute to his brother, S. Krishna Madhav, by staging his plays. The plays, all of which had a message to the society, brought out stunning performances from the actors.
The final play on Saturday, Being Eunuch, showcased the lives of ‘Hijdas’ in India and had a strong message that transpersons too can get into the mainstream professions rather than just asking for alms. One of the plays, Amaanush, was performed by kids who spoke of the excessive pressure put on children by the education system.
Samishtha from the play Amaanush, says, “Theatre helps us express feelings and thoughts that we otherwise cannot”. Abhinav, another performer, adds, “Before getting exposed to theatre, I would be hesitant to talk to people, but now, I am so much more confident.”
Vinay Nallakadi, the lead actor of the play Being Eunuch, says, “What I love about acting is that it lets you live many characters within just one life.”
