Is Dhruva a mistake?
Industry insiders say Ram Charan hasn't weighed up the cons of a remake.
Ram Charan is desperate for a hit. Back in 2009, Ram Charan’s second film Magadheera was one of the biggest hits in Tollywood and stood on the number one position for years until Baahubali and Srimanthudu surpassed it. Ram Charan did many films after that, but none matched Magadheera. His last few few films like Bruce Lee and Govindudu Andari Vaadele, were below average.
Now, he has chosen to remake the Tamil super hit Thani Oruvan in Telugu as Dhruva. Ram Charan is training hard to get into the character of the lead role and is banking heavily on this film. But the buzz in the industry is that in the film Thani Oruvan, it’s the villain, played by Arvind Swamy, who steals the show. The hero Jayam Ravi was totally surpassed.
In the Telugu remake, too, Ram Charan is playing the lead while Arvind Swamy plays the same negative role. “If the makers try to change the script for the Telugu version, it will spoil the story and will definitely not work. If the story is the same, then it will help Arvind Swamy more, not Ram Charan,” says a source.
Another reason given is that Ram Charan has erred in choosing to rope in Arvind Swamy for the same role. “It’s like a double edged sword. The Tamil version was a big hit and watched by most of the people in India and overseas. That’s a big disadvantage for Ram Charan as people wouldn’t want to watch Arvind Swamy once again. So this may affect the collections of the film. And if Arvind Swamy is liked, then Ram Charan’s role becomes insignificant,” added the source.
For his earlier film Bruce Lee too, many felt Ram Charan shouldn’t have named the film so cos the minute you say Bruce Lee, people thought of the great actor and felt Ram Charan was no match to his persona! Dhruva is currently being shot in and around Hyderabad and may hit the screens in December.
