While Mersal became a blockbuster, with a major boost from the controversy surrounding dialogues on GST, the audiences of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh seem to have had a keen interest to check out the Telugu version too

The national debate around Mersal and the eventual buzz seems to have worked wonders for Tamil star Vijay’s Adirindi, which has managed the biggest opening for the actor in Telugu so far. While Mersal became a blockbuster, with a major boost from the controversy surrounding dialogues on GST, the audiences of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh seem to have had a keen interest to check out the Telugu version too, as seen on the film’s release day on Thursday.

Interestingly, despite being a big star in Kollywood, Vijay had not managed to come close to the Telugu audiences like his contemporaries, Suriya and Vikram. In fact, most of his films were average successes in the past, with Jilla making decent money at the box office. His last blockbuster Theri, released as Policeodu in Telugu didn’t rake in great money at the box office either.

While it is not known if it’s the controversy or the content, the effect is visible on the box office opening numbers. Starring Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal and Nithya Menen as female leads, the film has music by A.R. Rahman and is directed by Raja Rani director, Atlee.
