Tollywood feels the heat
Even as speculation continues over who in the film industry has received notices from the police in the recent drug bust.
While the list of personalities who have been served notices in connection with the recent drug bust has been kept confidential by the Prohibition and Excise Department of Telangana and police officials, it seems a leak within has resulted in some of the names being widely circulated over social media.
A leading director and his actress girlfriend, a hero who had a blockbuster recently, and an aging star who is trying to reinvent himself, are some of the big names on the list. However, they were not reachable.
We did manage to speak to a few of those named in the list. Some issued outright denials, while others were frank enough to accept that they have received a notice.
Navdeep, actor
Yes, I have been served a notice and am willing to cooperate with the authorities. They are doing their duty by doing a proper check and I am glad. Making an accusation and being questioned is completely different from actually being guilty.
A few weeks ago, we collaborated with one of the accused for an event, and when the bust happened, I knew that I’d be called. Our nightclub BPM (Beats Per Minute) doesn’t involve in such activities. We believe in decent parties and are working towards giving the city a good nightlife.
Nandhu, actor
This is absolutely ridiculous. That’s not the kind of lifestyle I live and I am not very happy with people dragging my name into something that I have nothing to do with. I guess I am an easy target.
Subbaraju, actor
I am shocked to have received a notice from the Excise Department on Thursday. They have asked me to appear before the Special Investigation Team (SIT) in person on July 21. I don’t know who Kevin is and we are wondering how our names are in his list. None of my friends are into such (drugs) things, but hopefully, justice will prevail. I respect the system, and as a law-abiding citizen, I shall cooperate with the legal proceedings.
Tanish, actor
My mother broke down after my name was dragged into the drug controversy. I have no clue how my name has come up. I request everyone to please verify the facts.
Chinna, art director
This is character assassination. Our names have been circulating and the public thinks that we are involved. How can people take our names without any prior check? The damage has already been done, but we are ready for any tests and enquiry. We mind our own business (shooting) and don’t interfere in other activities; we seldom even go to a restaurant. My friends and family are upset.
Sam K. Naidu, cinematographer
I was shooting when my wife called me and expressed shock that my name is doing the rounds in the drugs case. I have grown-up kids, and it is really disheartening to link my name to this case. My family and children are in distress. I don’t even smoke cigarettes, how come my name has come up?
Mumaith Khan, actress
I have been on medication for the last two years, how can I be into drugs? Also, I have been staying in Mumbai and have drastically cut down my travelling due to my health issues. I have not received any notices either; people have randomly dragged my name into the issue without any knowledge.
