“Although we knew that COVID-19 would be around for some time, no one was prepared for this; it’s been devastating to see our near and dear ones losing their lives,” says actress Mehreen Kaur, reacting to the intensity of the ongoing second wave of the pandemic.

While her father contracted the virus last year, she and her mother caught the infection a few weeks after her engagement in March. “Both of us immediately quarantined ourselves in Mumbai,” she shares.

“It was a tough time dealing with the virus. We were worried for a few days. But thankfully we were able to come out of it,” she says, adding that her mother was a great support during the difficult phase. “Had I been alone, I don’t know how I would have responded. It would have been more difficult,” the star admits.

Still dealing with after- effects

“I am still dealing with the after-effects of COVID-19. I have been resting all this while because I am low on energy. I just started to exercise, and work out a bit by taking my pet for walks,” she said.

Mehreen’s new pet Berlin, which she calls her lil’ bundle of joy, has made things easy for her during her convalescence. “Berlin has been keeping us on our toes. Pets are not as complex as humans (laughs), so merely by looking at him, we get a feeling of empathy and it makes us better human beings,” she shares. “Berlin is our stress buster, and whenever he’s around there’s always a buzz,” she adds.

Mehreen says her fiancée and political leader Bhavya Bishnoi, was a pillar of support to her while she battled the virus. “I was very scared to take medicines during that time. My mom would call Bhavya and ask him to keep me posted on what should be done. He would check on me every day, on how I was feeling, and made sure that I ate well and kept myself hydrated,” she recalls, adding that Bhavya’s support was instrumental in her speedy recovery. “He was there for me all the time; he told me he was just one call away from me,” she beams.

Bhavya and family too test positive

But just when Mehreen was on the road to recovery, her fiancée tested positive for COVID-19 in Delhi. “In fact, his entire family was down with the virus,” reveals the actress.

So she is now repaying what her fiancé did for her — indulging in pep talk and checking up on his well being. “Isn’t that’s what relationships are all about — checking up on your loved ones? I think what’s important at this hour is empathy,” she says.

Mehreen admits that life has been tough in the second wave of the pandemic and the only way forward is to be responsible citizens and keep sane.

“I thought 2020 was very bad, but 2021 seems to be even worse,” she laments, adding that she is at times scared to answer the phone, fearing the news she might have to hear. “We have to stay indoors, stay united and strong in this fight against COVID-19,” the actress stresses.

Wedding postponed indefinitely

Mehreen and Bhavya had had plans of marrying later this year. However, the current situation is so grim that the wedding may be pushed to next year. “We are not even discussing it (marriage) at this point of time,” she says. “We are waiting for the situation to get better; and then, let’s see.”

Meanwhile, the actress is eager to resume the shooting of her film, F3. “I had started shooting already, but the film was halted due to the second wave of the pandemic,” she says.
