Rosary win on penalties

Kochi: Rosary HSS Goa clinched a 6-5 victory on penalties over Government vocational HSS, Poovar and reached the quarterfinal of 13th MAT all India inter-school football tournament in Aluva on Sunday.

The first match in the final phase of the event ended goalless in regulation time and in the shootout, Jesmon Sores, Alson Fernandez, Maxon Jesus, John Pereira, Elziel Jesus and Snedden Rodrigues scored from the spot for the Goan school.

Big win for St xavier’s

Kochi: St Xavier’s Thumba upset reigning champions Sree Kerala Varma Thrissur 1-0 in the final phase opener of Goal inter-collegiate football tournament at Sacred Heart College ground in Thevara here on Sunday.

Aneesh netted the winner as early as in the fifth minute and the Thiruvananthapuram side defended deep to earn a crucial win in the eight-team league. Faizal had capitalised by collecting the ball from a poor clearance and sent a timely cross onto the path of an arriving Aneesh, who slotted the winner.

Jaison lays lords low

Kochi: Jaison’s half century guided Tirurangadi CC to a 23-run win over Lords CC in the 4th President’s trophy T20 cricket tournament at Perinthalmanna on Sunday.

Jaison scored 61 as Tirurangadi posted 124 for 5 in their 20 overs and in reply Rafeeq bagged 3/15 to bowl out Lords for 101. In another match, Kent CC, powered by Arun’s 59 thrashed Kurikal Electricals by 52 runs.

Award for Dr kishore

Kochi: Dr G. Kishore, principal of Lakshmibai National College of Physical Education, was honoured with the Indira Gandhi Excellence Award in New Delhi. The award is instituted by the International Business Council. Dr Kishore was selected for his contribution to physical education.

It’s Joseph’s vs Ephreme’s in basketball

KOCHI: Hosts St Joseph’s and St Ephreme’s Mannanam are set to play the final of 16th centenary trophy basketball tournament in Pulikunnu on Monday.

St Joseph’s defeated St Thomas HSS Kozhencherry 54-34 in the first semifinal with Sudharshan P. top scoring with 16 and Thahir A.S. and Prabhash P.V. getting 14 and 13 points respectively.

In the second semifinal, St Ephreme’s drubbed Cherupushpa HSS Chandakampara 50-26. Abin Babu shot a game-high 15 for the winning side.
