Chennai: All new buses to be procured by the state transport department will have GPS installed in them. The decision comes with the proposal okayed by the cabinet committee on economic affairs on Thursday for setting up a unified system at the national level —    national vehicle security and tracking system — and at state level —  city command and control centre for global positioning system (GPS) — to be set in all public vehicles. The system will help track location of buses and video record incidents in public transport vehicles.

Transport commissioner Prabhakar Rao says, “The decision was taken by the Union government. We are yet to receive the modalities and guidelines of the project. We have already asked bus companies to give vehicles fitted with GPS from now on.

The Centre has said that cities with more than one million people will have their control centres financed by the central government.” The project at a cost of Rs 1,405 crore, will be implemented within two years, according to a press release from the ministry of road transport and highways.
