Tamil Nadu gives Rs 308 crore Pongal bonus to employees, teachers

Chennai: Bringing cheer to the state government staff and teachers in the state, chief minister J. Jayalalithaa on Sunday announced Pongal Bonus for state government staff and pensioners, a release said.
The state government has announced a bonus of Rs 3,000 for Group C and Group D staff and teachers. For the Group A and Group B staff of the state government, anganwadi workers, villages assistants and other temporary staff who have put in 240 days of work during the past year, a bonus of Rs 1,000 will be given.
“Pensioners and former Village Administrative Officers (VAO) in the state will also receive a bonus of Rs 500 on account of Pongal,” the release said.
The total expense to the state exchequer will be Rs 308.28 crores. “While only factory workers were given bonuses in the state, Pongal bonus was started for state government staff and teachers by late MGR. In that tradition, we will be giving Pongal bonus during this year too to ensure that Tamils celebrate Pongal with fervor,” the chief minister said in a release.
