Mixed reaction to stamping autos with colour stickers

Chennai: As the city police rolled out its decision on marking the good and bad autos with coloured stickers, the situation was not seen as so welcoming by the auto drivers though the general public seem to be happy with it.
M.S. Rajendran, state secretary of auto drivers union, says, “It is fine they are checking records and documents, but marking autos is not justified. I am not sure how this step will help.”
“We are already facing a lot of problem after the meter system was introduced and our profit is drastically hit. Now, rating our honesty will stir more confusion and problems,” said Ramesh, an auto driver at K. K. Nagar.
Kothandapaani, another auto driver, pointed out, “The police check us several times at several places and in the process delay the passengers .”
“The blue sticker which signifies that the auto has already been checked and it may help us get relief from the problem,” he added.
But he expresses his grievance saying that sometimes the police behave harshly, spoiling their image before the passengers.
Shelly Sunny, a Chennaiite who uses autos often says, “During nights, autos yet refuse to turn on meters. Though things have improved during the day. Such colouring will help us and seeing the that such autos are partonised.”
She adds, “The last time I was in an auto which had its meter running even when it had stalled at the traffic. In just 200 meters distance, the meter shot up to Rs 90. It seems we cannot trust the meters, too, now.”
