Chennai: Chennai’s Ramkumar Ramanathan, who had a fairytale run at the just concluded Chennai Open tennis tournament, jumped 119 places to a career best 407 in the latest ATP singles ranking announced on Monday.

Ramkumar came through a gruelling qualifier before stunning world no. 90 Somdev Devvarman in the first round of the main draw. His impressive run was, however, halted by Spaniard Marcel Granollers in the pre-quarterfinal.

Ramkumar, who bagged 32 ATP points for his efforts, said he was delighted to come closer to breaking 400. “When I got the wild card for the qualifying, I wasn’t expecting all this.

It gives me a lot of confidence and I would love to play more tournaments to improve my rankings further,” he said.

Ramkumar is likely to be named in the squad for the forthcoming Davis Cup Asia Oceania Group I tie against Chinese Taipei to be held at Indore from January 30.

The Chennai boy will resume his Challenger circuit campaign in February when Chennai hosts an event in the first week of February. “I have started my gym routine. I did some core exercises to start with,” he said.
