Rain likely in Tamil Nadu today
Sea conditions would be rough along Tamil Nadu, Pondy coast.
Chennai: With depression over the bay, which is around 200 km southeast of Nagapattinam on Sunday evening and nearing Tamil Nadu, the state is expected to receive good amount of rainfall on Monday. Weathermen say that north TN could also receive some rains on Monday.
“There is a bit of a slow movement of the depression. It is expected to cross Sri Lanka by Sunday night and we hope it would bring rainfall to Tamil Nadu on Monday,” said Dr Y.E.A. Raj, deputy director general of meteorology, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.
According to him, widespread rain is predicted for the southern districts, while north Tamil Nadu, including Chennai, may also get some rains. “The system is very much close to land and so the chances of further intensification into a cyclonic storm is very less. But, it can maintain the depression stage and bring good rainfall,” he added.
However, Dr Raj wasn’t sure about the amount of rainfall it could bring to the state. “There have been instances when a single system has brought 10 to 15 cm rains to entire Tamil Nadu, thereby changing the entire monsoon scenario. But, we have to wait and watch this depression,” he further said.
The Met bulletin said sea conditions would be rough along and off Tamil Nadu and Puducherry coast and so fishermen have been advised not to venture into deep sea for the next 48 hours.
