After spending 5 years in AMC and one year in HCMS, Dr. D. S. Yadav did his post-graduation in Radiology from Delhi University and ventured into the diagnostic market intending to provide Indian patients with high-quality diagnosis services.

The diagnostic sector is understood to be a major role player in the effectiveness of healthcare services. It serves as an intermediary in the healthcare industry deciding the preventive care and treatment route. Diseases can lead to an unprecedented economic burden while early and accurate diagnosis mitigates the risk of such burden through the avoidance of long-term complications.

Dr. D. S. Yadav started the journey of the Modern Diagnostic and Research Centre with an X-ray lab in Gurgaon in 1985. After spending 5 years in AMC and one year in HCMS, he did his post-graduation in Radiology from Delhi University and ventured into the diagnostic market intending to provide Indian patients with high-quality diagnosis services.

Question 1:

When and why did the plan of establishing a diagnostic center come into existence?

Answer 1:

Being a healthcare professional myself, I have always been aware of what patients have to go through due to the absence of an adept diagnosis service around them. When back in 1985 I decided to enter the diagnostic market, Indian diagnostic was still at its cradle. I felt the need for a top-notch diagnostic lab and founded MDRC. Though started with a basic lab and x-ray machine, MDRC gradually introduced advanced machines like High-frequency Digital X-ray machine, Mammography, OPG, CBCT, Ultrasound, and color doppler, 128 slice Dual Source Dual Energy CT Scan and 3.0 Tesla MRI among many others in the small town of Gurugram.

Moreover, I chose Gurugram as the location of my business despite it being a small town because of its proximity to the capital of Delhi. My goal was to serve a greater population of patients and Gurugram fitted into my vision quite perfectly.

Question 2:

What are the services you offer that make you different from others in the industry?

Answer 2:

Technological advancement is shaping the operations of all kinds of business sectors and the pathological diagnostic sector is one of the frontrunners among them. The modern pathological tests require advanced facilities from a standpoint of efficiency and accuracy. In MDRC, we have built cutting-edge pathology testing facilities which are equipped with state-of-art testing tools to guarantee 100% reliable diagnosis at the lowest possible price. Our pathology testing centers include fully automated biochemistry labs, hormonal and immunoassay systems, complete hematology with fully automated cell counters, factor assays, histopathology with immunohistochemistry, and microbiology with fast cultures to cater to the demands of the patients. Availability of such a wide range of diagnostic services is what makes us a leading name in the Indian diagnostic field.

Question 3:

Have there been any failures on your journey, if yes, what lessons have you learned from them?

Answer 3:

Setbacks and hindrances are the reality of operating any business. MDRC has always been ahead of its time and its peers which, sometimes, acted as a disadvantageous factor for the business growth. Without proper infrastructure support from the feeding hospitals, we had to witness down sliding in many of our business investments. However, we kept learning from our failures and pledged not to repeat them in the future. As a result, when the time came, we decided not to invest in PET scans and that played in our favor. Strengthened by our past experiences, we currently hold the capability of performing more than 2500 advanced tests which is a milestone on its own.

Question 4:

What are your plans to grow your brand?

Answer 4:

Owing to Government’s healthcare measures, people’s increased life expectancy and general healthcare awareness, and growth in the income level have resulted in high demand for preventive testing services in India. The domestic diagnostic sector holds the size of $9.5 billion and is expected to increase at ~11% CAGR over the next five years. Especially after the pandemic, people are more health-conscious than ever. Considering the market growth, we have already fanned out of our Gurugram-based main facility and established 3 more full-fledged diagnostic setups in Delhi-NCR. MDRC also has labs in Srinagar, Yamunanagar, and Kurukshetra. Recently, we also have added Kolkata and Panipat to our business roster.  We are also hoping to set up 4 operational labs in the next two months as a part of our business expansion campaign.

Question 5:

One piece of advice that you would like to give the people in this domain?

Answer 5:

Modern diagnostics are rapidly changing as a result of the emergence of new medical and treatment technologies. So, we need to keep ourselves open to the advancements and adopt new modalities whenever needed. Rigidity is detrimental for any business operation and the same goes for diagnostic services. As patients are expecting faster, more convenient, and more accurate testing services, the industry should take all the possible steps to ensure such world-class service.

Question 6:

What has been your Mantra for motivation and constantly walking on the path to do better?

Answer 6:

In my 36 years of journey with MDRC, I have seen a lot of shifts in the world of diagnostics. I have always valued the need for upgradation and the eye for seeking investing opportunities. My mantra has been to emphasize quality control as a key to business expansion and that has not failed me even once.

The Indian diagnostic industry is running on a high volume-low-cost testing business model to keep up with its pace of growth. In such an evolving marketplace, MDRC holds an advantageous position owing to its fair share of experience and expertise in the market. In fact, having an authoritative figure like Dr. D S Yadav as the head, the diagnostic chain is expecting exponential growth in the coming years.
