Chennai: An autorickshaw driver in suburban Chrompet gained applause from residents for displaying his presence of mind in rescuing a person.

Real estate broker, Ganesan, had accidentally fallen into a stormwater drain from his motorbike at New Colony, Chrompet. When the auto driver, S. Ravi, noticed an unconscious man he called for help.

“I finally took him home, which is very close to the spot,” he said. The real estate broker reportedly had an amount of Rs 50,000 in his bike.

“Besides getting him home, he handed over the money to us. I could not imagine of what had happened otherwise,” said wife of Ganesan.

To mark his honesty and presence of mind, the Chromepet Newcolony Residents Welfare Association will honour Ravi on Republic day, members of the association said.
