Senior officials flag major issues in higher education

Hyderabad: Senior higher education officials and experts admitted that there were several issues to be resolved in the sector, especially in terms of quality, employability and lack of R&D.

They were speaking at the inaugural of the two-day all India conference of vice-chancellors here on Friday.

Vice-Chancellor of the University of Hyderabad, Prof. B.J. Rao, pointed out top universities in the US were knowledge bases for the rest of the world, and were able to ‘ignite’ the minds of at least a few of the students, who over a period of time become thought leaders or Nobel laureates. He wanted to know whether Indian varsities could replicate such models.

Prof/ Rao said Indian institutes were connected to the political system while in America they were deeply connected to the society.

Telangana State Council of Higher Education (TSCHE) Chairman Prof. R. Limbadri said “I recently got to know that engineering graduates are applying for police constable jobs. This is because the abilities of students are not matching industry requirements. There is a huge mismatch.”

Founder and executive chairman, Cyient, Dr. B.V.R. Mohan Reddy said if Atmanirbhar Bharat had to become a reality, there was a need to push research & development in institutes.
