HC Tells Govt to Take Action against Malla Reddy Varsity
Hyderabad: The Telangana High Court directed the authorities to take action against Malla Reddy University, which is owned by the family of former BRS minister Ch. Malla Reddy, for flouting rules and setting up an off-campus centre at Balanagar.
The court took a serious view of the university staff’s refusal to accept the notices issued by it asking them to respond to the petition filed against the varsity.
Justice C.V. Bhaskar Reddy issued the interim directions to the state higher education department, Telangana State Council for Higher Education and University Grants Commission (UGC) to take action as per law against the private university.
The judge was dealing with a petition filed by Naveena Educational Society and its secretary A. Manohar, who said that the university was offering graduation courses at its off-campus centre at Balanagar, which was named as ‘Centre of Excellence for Commerce and Design.’
As per UGC guidelines and the Private Universities Act, institutions should not set up off-campus centres without getting approval from the authorities. Malla Reddy private university did not take any such permission, the petitioners stated.
In April, the High Court issued notice to the university and its off-campus centre and permitted petitioner Manohar to serve personal notice to them. Manohar’s counsel submitted to the court that the university and its centre had refused to receive the notice.
