Constable painting lost for 200 years sells for £375,000

A painting by John Constable that was lost for almost 200 years, recently sold for £375,000, the Daily Mail reported.

The 'oil' painting had been dated to 1821-22. Constable had spent two summers at a house he rented in Hampstead.  The painting was discovered during a house valuation.  The

"The 7in by 5.5in oil on millboard sketch is called 'View towards the back of a Terrace of Houses, with elder tree' and has the initials JC inscribed on it," the report stated.

Anne Lyles, a Constable expert, revealed the style of the painting is very similar to two paintings owned by his daughter Isabel, who was born in 1822.

While the exact location of the view in the artwork is not yet known, many speculate it could be the back of the home he living in or close by to it.
