Designer Masaba Gupta cool about fakes
The designer says she doesn't get upset when she comes across a copy of her design, instead takes it as a compliment.
Plagiarism is not only the domain of literature. Big designers too often fall prey to it, in fact much more than authors.
Masaba Gupta, for example, is considered to be the most copied designer these days. Ask Masaba how she deals with it and she says, “Earlier I would get irritated, now I notice my fakes at least twice a week. But I take them as adulation now.” For her, imitation is indeed the best form of flattery.
She further adds with a wink, “I seem to have overtaken Sabyasachi, whose designs were being copied the most in the recent past. I have started taking my ‘fakes’ as compliments.”
“In fact, it was Sabyasachi who changed my viewpoint. He said, ‘the power of your brand is as powerful as your face’.” Talking about her showstopper Shraddha Kapoor’s attire, Masaba says, “According to her body type I made a long dress which makes her look prettier, not that ‘boxy’ kind which would definitely be unsuitable for her.”
