Worn and torn!
What designers have to say about the distressed look that has conquered fashionistas' wardrobes.
Torn clothes and ripped jeans are fashionistas’ new favourite, as it has been attracting celebrities and youngsters alike. The distressed look, as it is popularly known, seems to be here to stay and the holes are getting bigger day by day.
Today, your denims are flashing more skin than the much-howled-at mini-skirt, which always gets flak from parents and naysayers. Is the trend really cool or was actor Rishi Kapoor spot on when he tweeted, “Buy two, get one begging bowl free. Sale at Zara’s,” when the clothing brand offered this deal on its distressed wear?
Kim Kardashian, Alia Bhatt, Priyanka Chopra, Kangana Ranaut, Parineeti Chopra, Deepika Padukone, Anushka Sharma and even actors including Salman Khan and Hrithik Roshan will disagree with Rishi as they are fans of the ripped style.
Designer Anand Bhushan agrees with Rishi’s hilarious tweet and feels this style statement is quite dreadful. “Personally, I am on board with him, but this is not a fad. It has been there from the ’70s. It was forgotten midway, but is back now.”
Its appeal lies in its ability to grab eyeballs, explains Bhushan. “What gets people is its flash value. The look is rebellious and people like to portray it as cool.”
“Perhaps, now is the time to move on as it no longer appears rebellious as everyone has adopted the style. What is the shock value of something very common? There is so much happening with denim like different washes and cool elements like steel woven in with denim,” adds Bhushan.
But if you are addicted to ‘beggar fashion’ and have grown rather fond of those rat holes, designer Narresh Kukreja of the swimwear label Shivan Narresh gives a few pointers.
“Keep the fit of the denim as close to your leg as possible because the skin takes over from the negative of the denim and makes the look sexy. Flared, baggy denims and big holes will make you look either trashy, unkept or a beggar, and none of these adjectives are something you want attached to yourself. And if you do want to flash some serious thigh, make sure to keep you legs fuzz-free and skin hydrated and clear, warns Narresh.
