Let's go grey
Grey hair has always been synonymous with growing old, but a new trend is popularising the silver-haired look in the fashion world
Kim Kardashian recently created a lot of buzz when she stepped out sporting gorgeous grey locks. Clarifying the rumours that it was a wig, the reality TV star said that she had indeed dyed her hair platinum blonde.
While many people dread grey hair, Kim and many other celebrities in Hollywood such as Bella Thorne, Kristen Stewart, Cara Delevingne, Solange, Ariana Grande, Mel B, Evan Rachel Wood, Rita Ora, Lady Gaga, Vanessa Hudgens and Kylie Jenner have proudly flaunted silver hair in the recent times. However, it’s not easy to carry off grey locks as gorgeously as these stars do, which may be one of the reasons why we don’t find Indian celebs opting for such bold colours. Experts say that there are several dos and don’ts one needs to follow to carry off the look.
Namrata Soni, a renowned make up artist and hairstylist says, “It’s a beautiful shade and will look good on Indian skin colour too. However, one needs to have the guts and courage to carry it off whether it’s a wig or actual hair colour. All the melanin from the hair is removed when you go silver, so the hair may get really frizzy.” She adds, “Kim has naturally dark hair, so it would have taken her 7-8 hours to get the colour she is now sporting. It takes a lot of time to remove all the colour from your hair. You should be able to maintain it well post that. When done right, you can look dramatic and make a style statement.”
Experts add that actors in India work on multiple projects and it gets difficult for them to dye their hair on and off. While a lot of people in India would never dare to go grey, celebrity make-up artist and hairstylist from Hyderabad, Emraan is proudly flaunting his silver hair. “I coloured my hair platinum blonde recently. A lot of people praised my choice but many others had negative things to say. I love my new look. If not grey, one can also go for purple or dark blue as they are in trend too,” says Emraan and adds, “It’s best to go for a no make-up look when sporting silver hair, as your hair is already bold. Just apply some moisturiser, BB cream and a lip balm.”
