Most people like a splash of colour in their wardrobes, but some prefer black. For someone in love with the colour black, other colours may seem too strong-hitting to the eyes. Black is not just a colour, it’s a mood. “Black is a powerhouse in the colour

spectrum, chosen for its versatility, slimming effect, and ability to pair effortlessly with anything,” says Dr Aman Bhonsle, PhD, Psychotherapist & Corporate Trainer.
Black is instantly visible, giving it a very ‘striking and bold’ presence. Despite its historical and cultural significance, black has indeed been punched and mocked with dualities. It may represent mourning in some cultures, while for others it may serve as a staunch depiction of power, might, elegance and persistence. While many have come to acknowledge it for its inherent grace and style, the colour’s long-lasting links to ideas of gloom still emanate across cultures!
A good sneak peek would be into American and European forms of mourning, as well as common fictional depictions of associating black with evil. From a Harry Potter gown to a witch’s hat to perhaps the cape of the Grim Reaper or a Wednesday Addams seated in a black dress, playing Rolling Stones' famous - paint it black on a black cello!
Impact of Colour

Kanan Tandi, psychotherapist, Body Speaks Better, from Goa speaks on the ‘psychological’ impact of black. People who wear black may experience an exalted boost in self-confidence or feel more authoritative. The next is an inward mirror into one’s mood and thought processes. Kanan says, “People might choose black when they are
in a reflective or introspective mood, or when they are simply feeling emotionally vulnerable.” Lastly, she shares how the true conception of black is never really possible due to the dualities.

Fashion symbols

While black may go into a tunnel of psychological and cultural associations. It can be a simple choice in terms of affordability, mix and match, elegance and less exposure towards stains. “Younger generations, particularly those in fashion or creative industries often favour wearing black for its versatility and association with modernity,” adds Kanan.
Black seems to be a favourite in the world of fashion. A versatile option that anyone can pick and choose to wear. From having a basic instinct to wear black to funerals to look classy yet show respect or simply suit a corporate professional look, black serves it all. When in doubt, wear black! Many also believe that black serves as a fantastic choice for date nights or simply to spice things up in private. Rudraksh Dwivedi, Founder and Creative Director, one who walks the world of fashion and style closely says, “The allure of black is multifaceted. It’s a colour that can be both bold and understated.” Black compliments every skin tone, making it a ‘safe’ yet ‘stylish’ choice. He adds, “While there may be moments when other colours take centrestage, I don’t think black will ever completely lose its appeal.”

Personality Blast

From movie villains to vampires and detestable characters, often they all have one thing in common – shades of black! Recent trends even shed light on the ‘Black Colour Personality.’ It is believed that those with a black colour personality tend to be innately versatile yet adaptable to various situations. Be it those who are more reflective or inward-looking, those who are highly sensitive or those who simply fall under the umbrella term of “Type A personalities.’
Dr Aman says, “It’s tempting to associate black with certain personality types, but this connection is often oversimplified.” He opines that black seems to appeal broadly because of its practical value, high contrast, and primal power. “It’s more about individual taste and situational appropriateness than a specific personality type,” he adds.
As one dives deeper into the gigantic realms of this usually kicked ‘colourless’ shade, one would only be fascinated by its many offerings and appeals!
