Oats revamped
Who said oats only make for a boring breakfast? Here are a few recipes that will change your perception of the cereal.
Ingrédients
500 gm oats
200 gm broken wheat
100 gm chironji seeds
30 ml ghee
100 gm sliced onions
20 gm ginger-garlic paste
5 gm turmeric powder
5 gm coriander powder
5 gm red chilli powder
2 gm garam masala powder
0.1 gm saffron
10 gm chopped mint
5 gm chopped green chillies
200 gm yoghurt
5 gm salt
2 litres vegetable stock
l 2 gm whole garam masala
Method
Add a little ghee to a pan, let it heat, add the ginger-garlic paste, whole garam masala and sauté, then add the oats and stir. After a minute or two, add the vegetable stock and bring to a boil, set aside. Meanwhile boil the broken wheat and chironji and make a fine paste.
In another pan, add the rest of the ghee and deep fry the onions till it is light brown, set aside for garnishing. In the same pan, add the remaining ginger-garlic paste, chopped green chillies, followed by the coriander powder, red chilli powder and turmeric powder, sauté it for a while and then add the paste of chironji-broken wheat, boiled oats and yoghurt to it. Let it cook till the oil floats on top. Garnish with fried onions, saffron, ghee and lime.
Ingredients
1½ litres milk
3 tbp oats
¾ cup sugar
20 almonds
½ tsp cardamom powder
A few raisins
1 tsp blueberry compote
Method
Soak the oats in milk for about an hour. Then boil the soaked oats with the milk until cooked and the milk is reduced. Then add sugar, cardamom powder, chopped almonds and the raisins. Bring it to a boil and garnish with blueberry compote and silver leaves.
Oats smoothie
Ingredients
1 cup oats
1 cup of water
1 tbsp of cocoa
2 tbsp of sugar
2 cups of milk
Slivered almonds (optional)
Grated milk chocolate (optional)
Method
Mix the oats and water and microwave for about 2-3 minutes. In a food processor, add the oats, milk, sugar and cocoa powder and whizz until smooth. If the consistency of the smoothie is too thick for your liking , add some more milk. Top with slivered almonds and some grated milk chocolate and serve.
