Hyderabad: In a first in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, Apollo Hospitals has introduced an outpatient Bone Marrow Transplantation facility. This service allows patients the benefits of bone marrow transplantation without prolonged hospital stays while also cutting the costs by 50 per cent. Also known as a One-Day Bone Marrow Transplant or Ambulatory Transplant, the process includes bone marrow stem cell harvest, high-dose chemotherapy administration and transplantation of stem cells-- all performed on a daily visit to the heamatology ward.

CEO, Apollo Cancer Centre, Tejesvi Veerepalli, said, “Outpatient Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) protocol is best suited for younger individuals who do not have significant illnesses and reside within a 60-minute commute to the hospital, provided they have a full-time caregiver or family member available."

The benefit of the procedure is to avoid infections, increase recovery rate and speed up healing process. Patients may need to stay in for a few days in case they develop any infections. Sharing her experience, Neha Kumari Nag, said, “Being able to undergo such a critical procedure without prolonged hospital stays has allowed me to recover in the comfort of my own space, surrounded by my loved ones. The daily outpatient care and support have made the entire process more manageable and less stressful."
