Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is a serious condition marked by persistently elevated blood vessel pressure, typically diagnosed at readings of 130/80 mm Hg or higher. Left untreated, it significantly raises the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and other severe health issues, making it the leading preventable cause of premature death worldwide. Hypertension also heightens the risk of ischemic heart disease, peripheral vascular diseases, heart failure, and aortic aneurysms. Managing and treating hypertension is vital for overall health and reducing associated life-threatening risks.

While emphasising on the power of 3D, Dr. Ramesh Gudapati, Chief of Cardiology & Joint Managing Director, STAR Hospitals, Hyderabad said, “Hypertension is a common but serious condition that can be managed or prevented with lifestyle adjustments and medications. A 3D approach underlined by Dedication, Determination, and Discipline is the key to managing high blood pressure. If followed religiously, the 3D approach can eliminate much of the threat of hypertension. When it comes to dedication, mindset, and motivation are crucial to stay on course of a long struggle. A person with hypertension must have the mindset and motivation to stay dedicated to a long list of things to do including checking blood pressure at home regularly and taking medicines.”
“Determination, which is the quality that makes you continue trying to do something even when this is difficult, is another vital element in the fight against hypertension. It has great significance when it comes to cultivating healthy eating habits. People with hypertension must adopt a diet abundant in whole grains, fruits, vegetables, and low-fat dairy products while reducing the intake of saturated fats and cholesterol can decrease high blood pressure by as much as 11 mm Hg. Potassium-rich foods like fruits and vegetables can counteract the effects of sodium on blood pressure. It is recommended to obtain potassium from foods rather than supplements, aiming for a daily intake of 3,500 to 5000 mg to potentially lower blood pressure by 4 to 5 mm Hg. Reducing salt in the diet can improve heart health and reduce high blood pressure by about 5 to 6 mm Hg. Eating fewer processed foods and adding herbs or spices to add flavour to food instead of salt can also help. Determination is necessary to follow the diet scrupulously”, he further added.
Discipline is a crucial part of the 3D approach to combat hypertension. It involvesestablishingand sticking to a routine for exercise, stress management, and lifestyle adjustments. Regular physical activity, such as 30 minutes of moderate exercise daily like walking or cycling, can lower blood pressure by 5 to 8 mm Hg and reduce hypertension risk. Aerobic exercises like jogging or swimming, as well as high-intensity interval and strength training, are effective too. Lifestyle changes such as weight loss can significantly control blood pressure while limiting alcohol to one drink for women or two for men per day lowers it by around 4 mm Hg. Quitting smoking and managing stress triggers are also essential for hypertension management.
Hypertension can be life-threatening, but it need not be so. With the 3D approach enumerated above, much of the threat can be removed, and people with hypertension can live as normally as possible. But it must be remembered that it is a long road and one must persevere with dedication, determination, and discipline to turn the tide.
