Experts Warn Against Liver Detox Scams, Advocate Lifestyle Changes for Liver Health

Kochi: The increasing prevalence of fatty liver disease, attributed to alcohol consumption and unhealthy lifestyles, was a key focus during the wellness convention themed "Liver Facts and Myths—Transforming Liver Health," held as part of the 32nd Annual Scientific Meeting of the Indian National Association for the Study of the Liver (INASL 2024). The event took place at the CSM Hall, Le Meridian, Kochi, and was inaugurated by Dr. Mathew Philip, President of the Indian Society of Gastroenterology (ISG).

Liver disease experts delivered multiple sessions during the convention, offering strategies to improve liver health. Recommendations emphasized the importance of giving up alcohol, maintaining a healthy weight, controlling sugar intake, exercising regularly, and following a balanced diet.

Dr. Rajeev Jayadevan, Chairman of the Kerala State IMA Research Cell, debunked the validity of homemade recipes circulated on social media as liver detoxifiers. He emphasized that the liver is inherently capable of cleansing itself and that avoiding harmful substances, like alcohol, is crucial for liver health.

The convention featured insights from prominent medical professionals, including Dr. G.N. Ramesh, Organizing Chairman of INASL and Senior Consultant in Medical Gastroenterology at Aster Medcity, Dr. Charles Panackel, Organizing Secretary of INASL and Senior Consultant in Hepatology at Aster Medcity, Dr. Harikumar R. Nair, Senior Consultant Hepatologist at Ernakulam Medical Center, Dr. Antony Paul, Senior Consultant Gastroenterologist at VPS Lakeshore, Dr. John Menachery, Senior Consultant Hepatologist at Rajagiri Hospital, and Dr. Manju George, Chief Dietician at VPS Lakeshore.

Additionally, Mr. Ramesh Kanjilimadhom, Director of Seygen Design, and Shefali Singh, Founder & Director of “Welcon” Wellness Convention, also addressed the attendees, contributing to the discussions on liver health and wellness.
