The Clip and Blue Placement technique, developed by doctors at Rajagiri Hospital, enables precise identification of residual tumor areas in breast cancer patients.
Doctors at Rajagiri Hospital, Kerala, have developed a revolutionary method for accurately identifying and removing residual tumors in breast cancer patients after chemotherapy. Named Clip and Blue Placement, the innovative technique has been recognized by the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO), a landmark achievement for Indian medical professionals.

Pioneered by oncology surgeons Dr. Subi T.S. and Dr. Anand Ebin, along with radiologist Dr. Teena Sleeba, the method uses surgical clips and methylene blue dye to mark tumors for precise removal. Unlike conventional techniques involving expensive titanium clips or radioactive seeds, this cost-effective approach reduces expenses from ₹30,000 to just ₹2,000.

The process involves placing surgical clips into the tumor before chemotherapy, which are later located using ultrasound. Methylene blue dye is then injected around the clips during surgery, enabling precise tumor removal while preserving healthy tissue. This technique supports breast-conserving surgery, preserving the breast's natural shape and boosting patient confidence.

“This method empowers women to fight cancer while preserving their breast, and its affordability offers hope to many,” said Dr. Subi T.S. and Dr. Anand Ebin. Dr. Sleeba highlighted its minimally invasive nature, noting the procedure is painless and guided by ultrasound, offering significant relief to patients.

Rajagiri Medical Director Dr. Gigy Kuruttukulam emphasized the technique's social impact, stating, “At a time when cancer treatments are increasingly expensive, this innovation reflects our commitment to affordable healthcare.”

The method has also gained national recognition, earning the Best Research of the Year Award at the National Oncology Conference in Bengaluru earlier this year.

This breakthrough technique is expected to transform breast cancer care globally by offering a practical, cost-effective alternative to traditional tumor marking methods, bringing new hope to patients worldwide.
