HYDERABAD: Intrauterine Insemination is cost-effective as compared to other assisted reproductive procedures. “In-vitro fertilisation, which is another assisted reproductive procedure, requires eggs to be retrieved. Medication is needed to ensure that the eggs are in good shape. A lot of hormonal injections are also administered, which add up to quite a sum. IUI is a comparatively simple procedure which does not cost as much,” said Dr Manjula Anagani, a fertility expert. Fewer drugs are required for IUI as compared to IVF.

Dr Suma Prasad, a senior gynaecologist, says, “In IUI, medicines are basically used to boost ovulation. They are simple, oral medicines which can be prescribed to any age group. Doctors do not exercise much control over the process of fertilisation in IUI.” Experts said there are more complications associated with IVF because of the higher dosage of drugs administered.
Dr M. Prasad, an embryologist, said, “IUI can prove to be more successful through the use of female fertility drugs. We often recommend that young couples opt for IUI rather than IVF because it is more cost effective.”
