Kochi: Unique kidney transplant surgery saves youth's life

kochi: A city hospital has performed a unique kidney transplant surgery to save the life of a 30-year-old woman suffering from end-stage kidney disease. The totally robotic procedure for the kidney transplant with trans-vaginal insertion was carried out at Aster Medcity in the first week of July.
“In the trans-vaginal route and robotic-assisted surgery a very small incision is required with reduced recovery time. The robotic technology allows high definition visualization and fine movements and increased precision with the robotic instruments. This leads to less traumatic surgery decreasing the risk of organ injuries and bacterial contamination with less abdominal discomfort and shorter post-operative recovery period,” said Dr. Kishore T A, Urology consultant at the hospital, who specializes in robotic urology surgery.
After the successful transplant, the patient has been discharged.
“In laparoscopic transplant surgery, several small incisions are made in the abdomen. In this case, the trans-vaginal route has been used to insert the kidney. While this has been used for removing the kidney, it is very rarely being used for a transplant. The method using robotic-assisted surgery has only been done at the Institute of Kidney Diseases and Research Centre, Gujarat and at the Urology and Renal Transplantation Department, University Hospital of Rangueil, Toulouse, France so far,” claimed Dr. Kishore.
